Joseph served in Co. F of the 133rd Infantry during the Civil War. He was injured on December 13, 1862, at the Battle of Fredericksburg and discharged due to disability.
The 1910 Census of Jeanette, Pa., lists Joseph Miller as a 72 retiree who immigrated in 1855 and owns a free home. Margaret is listed as his 76 year old wife of 50 years, born in Pa. They had 12 children, 8 of whom were living. In the household were their 10 year old grandson Albert Miller, 9 year old grand-daughter Adolphina Miller, and 18 year old grand-daughter Mary Fairbaugh. Joseph was a merchant.
