Russell was born in Pa. but raised in the home of his grandparents, Thomas and Susan Houser, in Washington Township, Belmont Co., Oh. By 1935, he was living with his mother Vera and step-father August Clements in Philadelphia. He served in the Army during WWII, from December of 1941 to September of 1943.
