Bernie died in a one-car crash in Hempfield Township, near Greensburg, Pa. He lost control of his vehicle on the slick pavement, northbound on Route 119, when he swerved into the east berm, hit a group of mailboxes, traveled another 100 feet, stuck a wooden fence, skidded another 161 feet, plunged over a 20 foot enbankment, struck a tree and then went another 10 feet when the car flipped over and landed on its roof in the middle of Jack’s Run Creek. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War from April of 1966 to April of 1969, achieving the rank of Sargeant.
