Notes for Mary Ellen (Spouse 1)
1874 Will Book, Cambria County, Pa. 11-213 Mary Ellen McCombie.

Fr. Kittell erroneously identified William McCombie's wife as Mary Ann Weakland, born 15 Dec 1822 and died 7 Dec 1894. Rev. Ferdinand Kittell, Souvenir of Loretto Centenary (Cresson, Pa.: Swope Bros., Printer, 1899), p. 184. In fact, Mary Ann Weakland was the wife of Henry Byrne. Will of George Weakland, Cambria County Courthouse (Ebensburg, Pa.), dated 28 Oct 1872, recorded 2 Jan 1873. Cambria County Will book II, page 400, transcribed by Lois Eckenrode Stafford; Abstract of Will of William Weakland, Cambria County Courthouse (Ebensburg, Pa.), dated 15 Apr 1877, recorded 27 May 1878. Cambria County Will Book III, pp. 115-116, by Lois Eckenrode Stafford.

The error is repeated at Ledoux, CVR, Vol. II, #1384, which indicates that William McCombie was married on 28 Sep 1841to Mary Ann Weakland (dau. of William Weakland and Airy Burgoon) by Lemke at St. Michael's Church. Ledoux, CVR, Vol. II, #1384. Ledoux probably relied on Kittell's so-called Second Index, based on the explanation of how he stated the parentage at CVR, II, p. 51.
