Notes for James (Spouse 1)
James was a shepherd and sheep-shearer in Manchester, England. He also worked at a lead foundary and developed an illness from lead poisoning that led to his emigration to the United States. He sailed from Glasgow on March 17, 1890, on the Vassel Argora, arriving in New York on April 10, 1890. James found work as a laborer at the tool house of the East Altoona Round House, Altoona, Pa., and sent for his family, which arrived in New York on December 15, 1890. They settled in Juniata, Pa. James became a gang leader for the Pa. Railroad. He died of chronic interstitial nephritis and myocarditis, precipitated by an infected foot.
