Notes for Philomena (Spouse 1)
Philomena was born in Galveston, Tx., but by 1850 her parents relocated the family to Carroll Township, Cambria Co., Pa. After the parents’ tragic deaths in 1852, she eventually returned to Galveston. where she married William Dinkelaker in 1865/6. She spent the rest of her life there.

According to Cecil Farabaugh, the grandson of Erhard and Annie Farabaugh, Philomena Moser was taken into their home in Allegheny Township, a month after their marriage [in April of 1853], and that she was a great favorite of her brother Joseph, who once visited her years later in Iowa. Although it is possible that Philomena lived with the family, the story as related has errors. It is clear that Philomena’s sister Mary Barbara lived with the family (see notes re Mary Barbara Moser), but Cecil had no memory of two sisters being with he family - he may simply be mistaken about the name. On the other hand, Cecil volunteered Philomena’s name without being prompted, so it is remarkable that he knew of her existence. Philomena cannot be placed in any household between 1852 and her marriage in 1865/6 (she is to date not found in the 1860 Census, whereas Mary Barbara is clearly placed with the Farabaugh family in the Carroll Township accounting). To confuse matters further, all of the Moser orphans were placed with their uncle John Illig as guardian, yet absolutely none of them are at his household in the 1860 Census. The clear error in Cecil’s account is the claim that Joseph Farabaugh visited Philomena in Iowa, because she in fact always lived in Galveston. Philomena’s placement wih the Farabaugh family is allowed here because of Cecil’s independent recollection of the name. If there was proof of her actual residence with the guardian uncle, she probably would not be included and Cecil’s account would be insufficient support for the connection.
