Thora and Harold settled in Pittsburgh, Pa. Thora worked for the Pittsburgh Press newspaper, where she met Hal, and later worked for US Airways, retiring in 1991.

Hal was in the U.S. Army, 1950-2. He was General Advertising Manager for the Pittsburgh Press newspaper, retiring in 1992 after more than 40 years of service. He was an avid reader, particularly of Civil War history.
