In 1908, the Campbell family was living in Patton, Pa., where James was working as a clerk and weighmaster. In April of 1910, the family is found in La Junta, Colo., where James was employed as a railroad laborer. The following month, children Francis and Robert appear in the Census for the second time at the home of their grandparents Henry and Helena Swope in Cambria County, Pa. After Rose’s death, James served in WWI and was a coal miner - his children Walter and John moved in with his parents in Patton. In 1926, James committed suicide by ingesting carbolic acid, at the Acme Coal Mine in Bentleyville, Pa.
