Edward was raised in Carrolltown, Pa. In 1900, he and his brother Urban were laborers living as boarders at the home of Mary Tate in Portage Twp., Potter Co, Pa. Ed and Mary lived in Galeton, Pa., and settled in Buffalo, NY. He was a locomotive engineer for the South Buffalo Railway.
