The Sharbaughs of Carrolltown are descended from a Jacob Sharbaugh, a blacksmith from Baden, Germany, who brought his wife Mary and his family of five children to the United States in 1832. The original family name was "Schabacher."
Charles embarked on a banking career with the First National Bank of Carrolltown, which was established by his father and grandfather, and became President in 1942. After working through a series of mergers, he later became senior Vice President and a Director of the U.S. Bank in Johnstown, Pa.
