Notes for Catherine Magdalen Poss
In 1875, Kate was living with her mother Regina and her third husband Leonard Hiller in Beaver Falls, Minn.
Notes for Karl Friedrich (Spouse 1)
Frederick likely immigrated with his step-father Michael, mother Gertrud and siblings on the Collins line vessel, The Pacific, arriving in New York City on 18 Sep 1854. A four year old child is listed on the manifest with the family, but the given name Charles appears to be in error. Frederick was raised in Carroll Township, Cambria County, Pa.

The 1870 Census places Frederick and his half brother Leonard at a boarding house in Fond du Lac, which was an old community in present day Duluth, Minn. He and Leonard soon married and started families with the Poss sisters, who had also recently arrived from Pennsylvania. In 1875, Fred was living in Beaver Falls, Minn., on property adjacent to Leonard.

The early deaths of the Poss wives eventually caused Fred and Leonard to mix and expand their households. In 1880, Fred was living with his wife Kate and daughter Mary at the home of his widower brother Leonard, in Birch Cooley Township, Renville Co., Minn. The 1885 Census shows a shared household between the brothers in the township as well and, although the record is less than clear, it appears that the home included various boarders.

Although the brothers shared a household during this period, they maintained separate farmland ownership. “Fred Farrenbach” is identified in a plot map of the township from 1888, as owner of two parcels, each with 160 acres. In 1895, 1900 and 1910 Fred was living with his second wife Franziska in New Ulm, Minn., living off his own income. A 1900 plot map shows that he still owned one of the parcels in Birch Cooley Township; a 1913 map shows that they had by then been transferred and subdivided.

Fred’s Will devised all property to his wife Franziska, expecting that she would upon her death divide it equally among the three children. It was probated in Brown Co., Minn., on February 9, 1920.
