Notes for Paul William Farabaugh
Paul is listed in the 1912-3 Polk Directory for Altoona, at the residence of his father Harry. He was employed by the Pittsburgh Paint & Glass Company.

In June of 1917, Paul registered for the WWI draft, with an inaccurate birth date. In August, he was recruited in Baltimore as a Seaman for the U.S. Coast Guard, deserting the position after two days. Paul is next found as a resident of New York City, as a Seaman with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He evidently was assigned to St. Johns, Nova Scotia in May of 1918. However, in June, Paul is instead registering for the second draft in NYC, with an application that offered more false information about years of birth, birth place and next of kin. In 1919, Paul applied for a Seaman’s Protection Certificate (a form of passport) which asserted he served on the USS Edgar F. Luckenbach, a troop transport vessel, when it arrived in the U.S. in May of that year from France with returning troops. There do not appear to be any direct service records memorializing his wartime service.

By 1930, Paul and his wife Fannie were living in the Stapleton neighborhood of Staten Island, NY. Paul was working as a clerk for a men’s clothing business. In 1942, Paul was working for Bethlehem Steel while the couple continued to live in Stapleton.
