Notes for Kenneth Michael Farabaugh Sr.
Ken and Rose Ann lived in Cherry Tree, Pa. Ken later settled in Indiana, Pa. He served in the Army during WWII.

At Ken’s 90th birthday celebration in 2014, his life was the subject of a speech delivered by his son Robert. He related that Ken grew up in Altoona, and as a child had jobs delivering the Saturday Evening Post and The Grit. and won a bicycle for his job that he rode all over the county. Ken would walk with his family to Mass at the Cathedral, and on school days have cinnamon toast at Aunt Margy’s. Ken spent Summers at the farm of his unlce Cyrus Wharton in St. Augustine, where he helped pick potato bugs, carried water to the foeld workers and swam in the mudhole below the farmhouse. The Cy Wharton farm was the place for old-fashioned parties, with harmonica playing, card playing and jokes that were not always for childen’s ears. During the Great Depression, their diet was often dependent on beans. Ken played shortstop on the Altoona High baseball team and also played football at Bishop Guilfoyle. While in school he worked at Posey’s grocery and had some training to become a meat cutter.

Ken met Rose Bray at a dance, and with Uncle Dave and Aunt Jean the couple would go to Somerset to dance to the big bands who stopped their on their circuits. Ken’s first car was a Ford and Rose’s job was to operat the inoperable windshield wiper by hand. Ken was drafted for WWII and was sent to Camp Thomas in Massachusetts. Plans for Kena nd Rose to first be married were scuttled due to Rose’s young age. Ken was trained by teh Army on a half-track vehicle and went overseas a month after D-Day. He was stationed in Paris, attached to the AIr Force. He ultimately was assigned to the signal corp, as a telegraph operaor. He became a sergeant and was stationed in the Netherlands, Belgium, Wales, England and Germany over the course of three years.

After the war, Ken and Rose married and had children. Ken initially worked for Singer Sewing Machine in Clearfield. He later took a position with Prudential Insurance, prompting a move in 1951 to Cherry Tree. He had an office in Barnesboro. Ken was a perenial sales leader for the insurance company, a job that would take him all ovr the country. Later in life Ken, always a fan of local sports teams, developed a passion for golf.
