Russell and Charlotte settled in Hampton, Va., in 1973. Russell was a U.S. Navy veteran, retiring in 1967 after 20 years that included service during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He then worked as a computer scientist for Computer Sciences Corporation for 21 years. He was also a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, volunteered for the Special Olympics and coached softball.
