Notes for Leonard Gerald Sharbaugh
Leonard was a WWII veteran, and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for his service in the 393rd Infantry Reg., 99th Inf. Div. He was an engineering student at Drexel University when he entered service on April 13, 1943. He was assigned to a tank destroyer division at Camp Hood, Tx., and attended radio school there. He was also assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and was enrolled at Louisiana State University until the program was cancelled and he was transferred to the infantry. Leonard was sent overseas to England in October of 1944 and soon after entered combat on the continent. He was killed in combat during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, on December 21, 1944. His parents learned of his death by telegram from the war department on January 15, 1945. Leonard’s remains were evidently not recovered, but he has markers in Belgium and at Calvary Cemetery in Altoona, Pa.
