John lived in Altoona, Pa. He died while on a Navy SEALS training swim, off San Clemente Island, Ca. He was a Hospital Corpsman, 3rd Class. An autopsy determined that he died of hypothermia. John passed out within 50 yards of completing a three hour 5.5 mile training swim, in water that was 57 degrees. He was wearing a wetsuit that covered most of his body, except for his legs. He was participating in the SEALS underwater demolition school at the time.
