Shirley worked for numerous civic and charitable organizations. She spent 17 years as manager of the clothes closet at the State College Food Bank. She was a member fo the Newburg Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary where she organized an award-winning marching unit. Shirley also was President of the State College American Legion Auxilliary for four years and was a member of the Centre County RSVP.
