Notes for Joseph Edward Schwab
Joe graduated from St. Francis College, Loretto, and started working as a draftsman at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works in Braddock, Pa., in March of 1883. Like his brother Charlie before him, Joe was bright, ambitious, and quickly promoted through the ranks. He served as a civil engineer, ran the blooming mill at Braddock, and then became superintendent of structural steel at the Homestead works. In 1896, he was promoted to run the Upper Union Mills, another Carnegie plant. Six months later, he was superintendent of the Duquesne Works and awarded a small ownership interest in the company. After Charlie became president of Carnegie Steel, Joe became a director, assistant to Charlie, and then president of the subsidiary American Steel Foundries. In 1900, the family lived in Duquesne, Pa.
Joe's partnership interest made him a millionaire when U. S. Steel was formed in 1901, and he started a new career as a stock market speculator on the New York Cotton Exchange. By 1905, the family was living in Manhattan.
Joe and Esther separated in 1907, which was reported on the front page of the New York Times, quoting the Munhalls as bitterly opposed to the match from the start. Joe associated with and helped finance the career of a Broadway soubrette actress, Paula Edwardes. After WWI, Joe was financially ruined in an attempt to corner the wheat market, and he never recovered. He died of alcoholism in 1922.
Notes for Esther Bonner (Spouse 1)
By 1910, Esther was a single mother living in Manhattan, NY. She died of carcinoma of the uterus.
