Notes for William Fechter
In 1910, William was a self-employed baker. He and Bertha were living in their owned home on Spruce Avenue, Altoona, Pa., with children John and Mary, and a 24 year old boarder, laborer Jesse B. Alcott. In 1920, they are in their Spruce Avenue home with son John, daughter Mary and son-in-law Edwin Ritchey. In 1930, William was a baker living at the residence with daughter Mary and Edwin, and their daughter Barbara.

William was the proprietor of the Westmont Bakery. He began as a small scale baker making deliveries by foot in 1910. He expanded the business at 2929 Spruce Avenue to two stories and an addition and by 1930 had a fleet of ten trucks and a rotary oven that was capable of generating 1300 bread loaves per hour. “Of a rather quiet disposition. . .his business came first and his success is a most worthy example to his fellow citizens.”
