James’ registration card for WWI in 1917 indicates he had served 2 years in the U.S. Calvary and that he was a clerk at the disciplinary barracks in Ft. Leavenworth, Kan. By 1920, he was a painter working in a paint shop, living with his wife Alice in Stockton, Ca. In 1930 and 1940, he was a house painter in the San Diego area, residing with his wife and children. James was living in Sonoma, Ca., at the time of his death, which was from a single car accident when his vehicle struck a utility pole north of Santa Rosa, Ca.
