Notes for Aloysius Leo Raphael Marx
According to two detailed newspaper accounts, Aloysius discovered this starving boy near Waterloo Station in London, seven years prior to the incident that caused his death. A woman from a nearby fruit stand suggested he adopt the boy. After taking him to Spain, he had him baptized at the church of St. Joseph in Madrid and then proceeded with the adoption. He was privately schooled, became proficient in four languages and learned to be an acrobat. He first performed in Geneva. He had many engagements upon their return to England. He had withstood some operations to remove tumors, but when admitted to St. Thomas Hospital to have a growth removed from teh back of his pharanyx, there were evidently signs of heart failure and he could not be revived. Aloysius charged that he had been given too much chloroform but a jury’s inquest returned a verdict of “death from misadventure” instead. After the lad’s death, his mother identified herself as Mrs. Elsie E. Anning and indicated she thought her husband had taken the child to Johannesburg many years ago. Aloysius had though that the boy’s mother had died when he was 3 1/2.
