Notes for Edgar William Smearman
Edgar and Agnes settled in Altoona, Pa. At the age of 18, Edgar was a machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad when he sustained a left leg fracture. He was caught under a falling casting at Altoona’s 12th Street erecting shops. He continued to work many years as a machinist for the P.R.R. Edgar died of hypostatic pneumonia and suffered from Wernicke Syndrome, a vitamin B deficiency that is usually caused by alcohol abuse.
