Conrad immigrated to Philadelphia in 1837. In 1850, he and his first wife Catharine were living in Juniata Township, Blair Co., Pa. By 1860, he settled with his second wife Sarah in Carroll Township, Cambria Co., Pa., where Conrad was a farmer. In 1870 and 1880, he is listed there as a farmer with young children, but without a wife.

Sara was a convert to the Catholic faith, prior to her marriage to Conrad. Her death certificate is the only source for her maiden name, “Lauding,” but there are several indications that her former name was Stambach.
