Bede worked as a telegraph operator and train dispatcher in Cresson and Barnesboro, Pa., for the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1913-1930. During that period, he began managing Bender & Bertram, a motorcycle, blacksmith and wagon shop operated by his father Harry and Frank Bertram, in 1915. In World War I, he served in the Navy from May of 1917 to June of 1919, and was assigned to active submarine radio duty and to the battleship fleet. In 1922, he and his father operated the Carrolltown Battery & Auto Co., which was the predeccessor to the Bender Electric Company, established in 1929. From its central location in Carrolltown, Pa., Bender Electric Company specialized in the sales of Frigidaire refrigeration equipment, appliances and commercial fixtures. When the company peaked in the 1950's, it had installed products in an estimated 1,200 businesses and 12,000 homes, and had expanded to locations in Johnstown and Altoona, Pa., with fifty employees (forty from Carrolltown).
