Notes for Joseph E. Swope
Joseph died in a tragic sawmill accident. While sawing logs, he apparently lost his footing and then fell onto the blade at his father’s sawmill, which severed his left shoulder and cut into his heart. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the 493rd Bomb Squad, 7th Bombing Group for the Army, as a pilot. He flew several missions wth a B-24 bomber in the China-Burma-India Theater. After the war he continued to serve with 446th Bombardment Squardron Reserves from the Johnstown Municipal Airport.

Leona graduated from the Pittsburgh School of Nursing in 1940. From 1942 to 1946 she served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, obtaining the rank of lieutenant senior grade. She served in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. From 1966 to 1994, Leona was a tax collector for East Carroll Township. She received a certificate for voting in over 50 consecutive years. She was actively involved in several local civic and patriotic organizations during her lifetime.
