Notes for Albert J. Farabaugh
Albert, frequently known as A.J., was raised in Carroll Township, and in Blacklick Township, Cambria County, Pa.

In 1880, he was a young farmer situated in nearby Pine Township, Indiana County, with his wife Martha. He had a variety of public offices there. In 1885, he is identified as a local school treasurer and in 1889 won an election to become a local judge. In 1890, he was an election delegate for the Democratic Party, and later that year he was the executor of the estate of his father-in-law, Bernard McNeel. In 1893, when Albert was Pine Township’s treasurer and tax collector, $85 in cash and $184.55 in unnegotiated school orders made out to citizens were stolen from a trunk at the family home in Nolo. By 1898, A.J. was the postmaster at Pineton. The 1900 Census listed A.J.’s main occupation in Pine Township as farmer.

Albert later settled in Spangler, Pa., where he was a policeman and owned a coalmine. He died of apoplexy.
Notes for Martha A. (Spouse 1)
Martha was raised by her grandparents John and Martha Hasson. This appears consistent with a relative’s assertion that she was adopted. Moreover, in the 1860 Census, Martha McNeal is listed as a 3 year old in the household of John (59, farmer, b. Ireland) and Martha Hassen (56, b. Ireland) in Blacklick Township, Cambria Co., Pa. Also listed are John Hassen (24, farmer), Susan Hassen (18), Margaret Hassen (21) and Patrick McVey (13).

In the 1870 Census, Martha McNeal is listed as a 15 year old in the household of John (69, farmer, b. Ireland) and Martha (67, b. Ireland) Hassen in Pine Township, Cambria Co. Also listed are Orland McClosky (15) and Margaret Hassen (26). and these Census records appear to confirm that Martha was raised by the Hassens shown.

Martha’s death certificate identifies her biological parents as Bernard McMiel and Mary Hasson. Bernard, aka Barney, is evident as a farmer in various Census records for Pine Township and newspaper accounts. However, the identity of Mary Hasson is only corroborated as “Mary McMeel Grove” in the Last Will and Testament of John Hasson.

In 1898, “Mrs. A.J. Farabaugh can boast of having the finest cabbage garden in this vicinity [of Pineton, Pa.].”
