Notes for Leonhard (Spouse 1)
Leonhard immigrated with his father Michael, step-mother Gertrud and siblings on the Collins line vessel, The Pacific, arriving in New York City on 18 Sep 1854. He was raised in Carroll Township, Cambria Co., Pa.

The 1870 Census places Leonard and his half brother Fred at a boarding house in Fond du Lac, which was an old community in present day Duluth, Minn. Leonard worked on farms and when he was 25 years old he purchased 80 acres in Section 9, Birch Cooley Township, Renville Co., Minn. He improved his farm there to 400 acres. He and Fred soon married and started families with the Poss sisters, who had also recently arrived from Pennsylvania. The 1875 state Census places Leonard and his family in residence at nearby Beaver Falls, adjacent to Fred.

The early deaths of the Poss wives eventually caused Leonard and Fred to mix and expand their households. According to the 1880 Census, Leonard was a 35 year old farmer and widower at his farm in Birch Cooley Township. Residents were Fred, several in-laws, and his children Michael, Annie and Ellen. His son Leonard is not listed. The 1885 Census shows a shared household between the brothers in the township as well and, although the record is less than clear, it appears that the home included various boarders. Although the brothers shared a household during this period, they maintained separate farmland ownership.

The 1888 county atlas shows the rectangular outline of the “Leon Farrenbach” plot in the upper portion of the township. Ajacent to the north is the land of “F. Farrenbach,” Located several plots to the south and west is additional land owned by “Fred Farrenbach.” Leonard’s parcel at the time was 320 acres and is also identified in maps from 1900 and 1913. He also had 160 acres in section 9 of Norfolk Township, according to the 1888 map.

In January of 1899, Leonard returned to Pennsylvania and visited with Albert J. Farabaugh of Pineton. “Leonard left this part of the country about three years ago, almost penniless, and settled in Minnesota, where he has accumulated quite a fortune.”

According to the 1900 Census, Leonard was a 51 year old farmer, married ten years to his second wife Mary, and still living at his farm in Birch Cooley Township, Renville Co., Minn. From 1900-1920 they lived in Morton, Minn., and then returned to the nearby farm. Leonard served on the township's Board and the locality's school Board. He also reportedly lived in Olivia, Minn. His surname became anglicized to "Farenbaugh."
