Also, she was 48 years old; owned realty worth $500 and personalty worth $200; and lived in Munster Township. Her children are listed as Isadore (26, "waggon maker" with realty worth $500 and personalty worth $150, and born in Baden), Matthias ("Mathias", 24, and a cooper born in Baden), Pauline (17, with schooling and born in Pa.), Mary A. (15, with schooling and born in Pa.), Susan (11, with schooling and born in Pa.), and Mary M. (8, with schooling and born in Pa.).
Genevieve married William Sill on January 7, 1865. They initially lived on William’s Allegheny Township farm but by 1880 they had a home in Loretto borough.
Notes for Michael (Spouse 1)
The family of Michael Fehrenbacher is not closely related to the five immigrant families descended from Johann Georg Fehrenbacher (1768-1851). Michael was not born in Kappel am Rhein. His Declaration of Intent to become a U.S. citizen indicates that he was born in Schutterthal (now Schuttertal), Baden, which lies a short distance directly east of Kappel. The record also shows that he immigrated from the port of Le Havre, France.
Michael's native town of Schuttertal has Catholic church records in Latin that list many Fehrenbacher families dating back to the mid 17th Century. According to an excellent study of the history and inhabitants of Schuttertal, Michael was a "bierbrauer" (beer brewer) and "küfermeister" in the town of Regelsbach, Baden. It also lists 6 children and indicates that "die familie ist 1840 nach Amerika ausgewandert" (the family left for America in 1840).
Michael, Genevieve and their three sons came to America on the “Utica,” arriving in New York City on November 25, 1841.
On August 1, 1848, Michael acquired 15 acres bordering Allegheny and Washington Townships, Cambria County, Pa., adjoining lands of Jacob Glass, McClelland, and others. It had 6 acres cleared, a small house and stable. It was assigned to Michael from a Florence Meyers, with no purchase price evident. The property was previously owned by James Magehan, but it was seized by the Sheriff to satisfy a $208.65 debt owed to the county. Florence Meyers purchased it at a sheriff's sale in 1839, for $110.00.
According to the 1850 Census, "Michael Fairbugh" was a 45 year old cooper from Germany with real estate valued at $200, who lived in Washington Township with his German-born wife Eve (age, 42), six children, and a 59 year old illiterate brickmaster named Michael Staley. They had Isadore (15, with schooling and born in Germany), Matthias ("Matthew", 13, with schooling and born in Germany), George (10, with schooling and born in Germany), Pauline ("Mary", 7, with schooling and born in Pa.), Mary A. (5, with schooling and born in Pa.), and Susan ("Susanah", 1, and born in Pa.).
Michael's Naturalization Record dated September 6, 1852, states that he was living in the United States five years, fixing his arrival at certainly no later than 1847.
Michael was a farmer and a carpenter. It is believed that Michael was also a stonemason like several other of the early Farabaughs. He helped build the canal locks near Williamsburg, Pa. The cause of Michael's early death is unknown.
Notes for William (Spouse 2)
William was a farmer in Allegheny Township, Cambria County, Pa., living with his wife Agnes, and children Mary and Anthony.
