Notes for Charles Augustine Langbein
According to the 1880 Census, Charles was born in New Jersey and his parents were born in Würtemburg. Christina was born in Pennsylvania and her parents were born in Bavaria.
Charles Langbein volunteered service as a Private in Company E of Regiment 37, New Jersey Infantry, during the Civil War, from June 9 through Oct 1, 1864. He and Christina lived in Twin Springs, Iowa, for 1 1/2 years after their marriage there, before moving to St. Lawrence, Pa. The family moved to Carrolltown, Pa., in 1881. Charles owned a store in Carrolltown for a brief period in the late 1800's. He was a harness maker by trade and opened a shop with the assistance of his son George in Ebensburg, Pa., when the family relocated there. Charles also served a term as a Deputy Sheriff of Cambria County. In the 1890 Atlas of the county, Charles is identified as a manufacturer of and dealer in whips, saddles, bridles, horse coverings, and complete harnesses, in Ebensburg. By 1900, Charles and Christina were living in Patton, Pa.
Charles was last engaged in the hotel business and held a liquor license as well. He died of the dropsy after an eight week illness.
