Notes for Olan Harris
Olan and Alva settled in Coal Center, Pa. Olan was a coal miner. In 1955, the family lost an estimated $20,000 to a fire that destroyed a large barn and two silos on the Harris farm near California, Pa. The blaze destroyed 120 tons of baled hay, 1,100 bushels of oats, about 1,000 bushels of wheat, milking machinery and some small farm machinery.

Alva and Olan were active for many years in the Banner Grange in Fallowfield Township, Washington County, Pa. Alva was a prize winner at the Fair conducted in 1961, for both baked and canned goods. In 1965, she won for her relish, spiced pears and red raspberry jelly. At late as 1982, she was a prize winner for her pineapple squares.

In 1976, Olan and Alva were awarded $62,500 in a court of law against the Pennsylvania Commonwealth, for the loss of 22 acres on Malden Road in California, Pa., that the state condemned to facilitate a new highway.
