Frank lived in Sparta, Ill. He was tragically shot and killed on December 17, 1967, while asleep in his car at a rest stop along Interstate 70, near Washington, Pa. His sister Lucy and 6 year old son Ted were in the vehicle but unharmed. Lucy awoke at 5 AM to hear the shot and saw a hitchhiker leave the scene. The hitchhicker matching Lucy’s description had been seen a few hours earlier with a sign saying “Philly.” Frank was killed with a single shot to the head from a .38 caliber pistol. He was traveling to Cambria County, Pa., to visit his ailing father, Isadore. Isadore died later that same day at the hospital in Spangler, Pa. The crime was apparently never solved.
