In 1935, James was living in Patton, Pa. In 1940, he was an apprentice bricklayer at Bethlehem Steel, living with the family of his aunt Leona Dinehart in Johnstown.
James was a Private, First Class during WWII. He was one of 14 drowning victims in the Gulf of Mexico during military maneuvers. The soldiers’ landing barge ran aground in a sand bar near Carrabelle, Fla. during a storm, and the landing ramp was accidentally lowered. Five other soldiers survived. The men were members of a garrison at Camp Gordon Johnson at Carrabelle. James served in Co. H, 112th Infantry, 28th Division.
