Erhart received Confirmation during the centennial Celebration of St. Michael Church, Loretto, Pa., on October 10, 1899. He worked on the family farm until 1904, when he went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Cresson, Pa. He worked several jobs in the Midwest, including a position with Bell Telephone in Kansas City and with the Santa Fe Railroad in Colorado.

In 1912, Erhart returned and purchased farmland at R.D., Loretto, Pa., near the Dutch Road junction between Loretto, Chest Springs and Carrolltown, which was later occupied by his grandson Augustine. During WW II, he did defense work in Cleveland, Ohio, but otherwise remained a farmer until his retirement in 1958.
