Charles died of a fractured skull in a coasting accident on Sample Street in Ebensburg, Pa., at the age of 12.
The accident occurred on a street that was usually closed for sledding, but was not on the fatal evening. A truck driven by Robert O. Evans of Ebensburg, and owned by O.E. Super-Tire Company, stopped at Sample and Phaney streets to let a coaster pass. But when the driver proceeded he heard a sound against the right front wheel and after stopping found that he had passed over a second sledder.
