Notes for John Stephen Smajda
John was a supervisor at Bethlehem Steel, where he worked for 36 1/2 years. He was a sargeant in the Air Force, and served in the Philippines. While at Clark Air Base there in late 1945, at the age of 18, John was assigned to the motor pool and was involved in transporting Japanese prisoners of war. John recounted that there was no need to guard them, because escapees would have been killed by the Filipino people. John’s prized possession was a 16 inch square painting of Mt. Fuji given to him by one of the prisoners, who were soon released after the surrender. John was then involved in the disposal of surplus aircraft at the Base.
