Notes for Virginia Louise Hall
Louise was the oldest of four children; Bill, Gene, and Dick were her younger brothers.  They were raised Catholic and their mother had a black nanny to help with the children. She cherished memories of family outings to what they called the new farm, and the old farm.  Her father traveled often in his work, so when he was home he spent time with the family. When Louise was 9 years old, her father died. At age 11, the family moved to Gary, Ind., to live with her grandmother and 2 uncles.  That experience proved hard, as the uncles were alcoholics. That home was at the end of the block of Rhode Island street; incidentally, it was the same street her future husband lived on.
During her high school years, Louise was an active student. She was president of the Girls Athletic Association (GAA), was involved in chorus and theater, enjoyed swimming and field hockey, and excelled in sewing.  Her talents in sewing would prove to support her well during her married years. After high school, she worked at the A&P grocery store, where she was responsible for the dairy case, and during the war, coffee and cigarettes, which were items under ration. She had many talents and was good at everything she tried, but ceramics and sewing seemed to be her favorite creative outlets during her adult years.
In 1944, at age 22, she married Ray Farabaugh, age 27. They lived in an apartment on Carolina St. before moving into their first home at 620 Indiana St. in 1947. All of their children were born here. Louise belonged to a bridge club and pinochle club that met once a month. The bridge club always met at her home for Christmas, and her three daughters would play waitress for the event, while feasting on the leftovers. She belonged to St. Luke's Church, and was an active member of the Arch Confraternity.
In 1968, they moved to Hammond, IN, then again in 1972 to their former vacation spot, Kerbans Cabins, in Chassell, MI; they renamed the resort to Sunrise Cabins.
On March 3, 1980, Louise suffered a debilitating stroke from which she never fully recovered.  On February 27, 1988, she died in Marquette Hospital after spending 2 months in hospitals. During the years of her stroke, she managed to try her hand at the crafts that she loved - crewel embroidery, some ceramics, and other miscellaneous crafts. Despite her difficulties, her spirits were always lifted. She loved company, especially her grandchildren and family. She was particularly proud of her children's musical talent and always expected the guitars to appear when everyone was gathered.

Ray was an Army veteran of WWII and was a crane operator for US Steel. He was last a resident of Hammond, Ind.
