Notes for Thomas William (Spouse 1)
Thomas was living in Altoona, Pa., in 1905. In the following year he was a married carpenter living in Steubenville, Oh. The 1910 Census finds him and his wife Sarah living in Liverpool Township, Columbiana Co., Oh., where Thomas was an odd-job man at a dairy.

In 1917, Thomas was a millwright for Jones & Laughlin Steel in Woodlawn, Pa., was living with Sarah in Freedom, Pa., and had served briefly as a Private in the 5th U.S. Engineering Corp. During WWI, he served in the Army from 1917-1919, and then was in the Navy, 1919-1923, as a First Class Seaman. In 1920, he was serving as a Seaman on the USS Chandler (DD-206) in Brest, France (pictured).

Thomas became a diver by occupation and drowned in the Ohio River in 1924. He was attempting to repair a valve in seven feet of water on government Lock No. 5 and failed to answer tugs on a lifeline. His body was found lying on a river bed, near his diving helmet that was detached in some undetermined manner. The death was ruled to be accidental.
