Joseph retired in 1982 from Chicago Rivet, Tyrone, as a machinist after 14 years of service. He was previously involved in the operation of the Hagg family farm and was a lifelong farmer. Joseph also belonged to the Keystone Promenaders, a square dance band, for many years.
