Ferdinand was raised in Carrolltown, Pa., He is listed as a fireman in the 1923 Polk Directory for Altoona, Pa. He retired as an engineman for the Pittsburgh Division of the Pa. Railroad, retiring after 52 years of service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Firemen and Enginemen.
