Notes for Susan Farabaugh
In 1930, Susan is listed as a widow on 8th Avenue in Altoona, Pa., living her her son John W. and a 66 year old lodger named Catherine Wolfe.

As an aged aunt to Charlie Schwab, Susan once made an appeal to him:

She enclosed her life savings, $2000, and asked him to invest it for her so that she could live on the proceeds for the rest of her life. Fearing that any investment might prove a disaster, Schwab waited a few days and sent her back a check for $5000, claiming that the difference represented her profit on the investment. By return mail, he received the check back again, along with the request that he invest the $5000 in an equally profitable manner. Somehow he managed to persuade her that he could not work miracles, and that she was content with the $3000 gain.

Susan lived in the same home in Altoona’s 6th Ward for 54 years, succumbing to pnemonia after a three day illness. Here obituary indicates that she was only survived by her son John W., but it appears that her daughter Gertrude was still alive at the time.
Notes for John (Spouse 1)
John is listed as a 5 year old boy in the 1850 Census, with his family in Middle Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pa. In the 1900 Census, he is listed as head of household with a free home on 8th Avenue in Altoona, Pa., as a carshop painter, with his wife Susan and children Gertrude and John. In 1910 and 1920, John is living on 8th Avenue as a painter for the railroad with his wife Susanna and son John W. Altoona city directories continuously list John as a painter there as early as 1873. He worked in that capacity for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
